The Exploding Soda Cocktail

Freeze a mint flavored Mento in an ice cube and put it in a diet coke or any artificially sweetened soda should work. Something darker is preferable to hide the frozen Mento isn't so obvious. Then, a few minutes later when the Mento is exposed to the soda, BOOOSH!

Cruel, yes. Funny? I think so. Be warned when you visit me! MWAH HAHAHAHAHA!

More Matchstick Goodness

Earlier this year, I brought you a man who spent years putting together a matchstick galleon. Here are two more matchstick constructions that are pretty awesome. First up we have Micheal Arndt, a guy who built his own full scale McLaren 4/14 F-1 race car from about 956,000 matchsticks, 1,686 tubes of glue, at a cost of about $8,725 over the course of 6 years. The car can be taken apart into 45 pieces for transport to matchstick builder's conventions.

Kudos to Mr. Arndt. But he seems to take his time when compared to Patrick Acton who is building Minas Tirith (the City of Kings from J.R.R.Tolkien's Lord of the Rings) done entirely in matchsticks, Started in 2007 and planned to be completed in 2010. These pictures from MatchStickMarvels.com shows incredible amounts of detail that the artist has put into the model:












Why do I say slow? Because Mr. Acton has used over 3 million matchsticks and produced all of these models as well (take note of how long they each took!):

Antonio Gaudi at the Paris Theater, NYC

I am a big fan of architecture, and yesterday I went to the Paris Theater to see Antonio Gaudi, a movie from director Hiroshi Teshigahara. The movie is without narration but is given movement and life by an excellent score. As other reviews have noted the film is quite a visual poem, and recommended if you are into architecture and art films.

But I do have to say that the reason I am posting this is to gripe. The Paris Theater in NYC is one of the leading independent theaters for art films in the city. The quality of the print that they had along with the sound was really quite bad -- lots of dirt on the print and lots of sparks on the sound. Further to that, nowhere on the ads in front and the description of the movie do they tell you that this is not a new movie. Nope... this is a movie from 1984!! All of that was something that I dealt with and was mostly ok with.

What annoyed me far more was a guy in the theater taking flash photographs every 10 to 15 minutes or so. I finally saked him to stop, and did he? Nope, went right on doing it. I had to go find someone in the theater to make him stop, which is annoying in itself since I miss part of the movie due to someone elses selfishness.

Making things worse? You couldn't find a single person that worked in the theater, which is pretty tiny. I ended up searching for about 10 minutes before I found the guy who is the usher. I told him about it, and the guy went in and told the guy to stop. That was it. Afterwards I talked to the manager who just said "Sorry. They guy said it was an accident." I explained that this happened throughout the movie, and the manager just went through the motions of saying sorry.

If the theater actually had an usher in the movie, this would never have happened. To have to search for someone and not find them is ridiculous. And there is no where on the website that lets you contact them, other than a phone number for the box office. Talk about crappy service -- not something you expect from an independent theater on Fifth Avenue.

So In general, this is a big BOOOOOOOO to Paris Theater.

Hell's Gate

From English Russia, this place near Darvaz, Uzbekistan is called The Door to Hell. Geologists were drilling for gas over 35 years ago when during the drilling they suddenly came on an underground cavern so big that it swallowed the drilling site with all the equipment and camps. No one dared to go down because the cavern was filled with gas, so they ignited it to prevent poisonous gas from coming out of the hole. It has been burning unstopped since then. Nobody knows how many tons of gas has been burned during all that time, but it seems to be an endless supply. See the video on the site as well.
