Curved Spiral Shell House Designs

From Dornob.com comes an article on a curved spiral shell house design:

Like something found 20,000 leagues under the sea or set in the center of the planet, this dazzling house design by Senosiain Arquitectos was patterned after a shell - as if you could not tell. Imagine for a moment being one of the two children being raised in this structure, a
fairy tale wonderland of architectural and interior design delights.

Inside the home, the odd forms of the exterior continue to wrap through and connect each space. The interior feels much like it could be outside, filled with plant life, organic pattens and winding stone paths.

The only real question is whether or not this is a livable space. It is certainly fascinating, absolutely cozy, brilliantly creative and highly original but only time will tell if it can be a home as well as an amazing house.

In some places, rectilinear design objects are set against the ever-present curves but they are still tucked within the overall rounded theme. The rounded shell itself provides protection from the elements for each interior space.

Each space flows into the next, with the common elements of white (for the shell and some furniture) and wood (for virtually everything else) tying the experience together. Likewise, natural ventilation carries throughout the whole house.

The shift from day to night in the structure is a remarkable one, as the ribbon of the building edge becomes a kind of border between the light glowing within and the ever-darkening surrounding skies and forest around.

The net result at night is a sense of comfort and enclosure - a connection to the elemnents through a copious use of glass mitigated by a thick, wrapping exterior shell. All in all, the results are somehow a blend of ultramodern and completely contextual.

Roadkill cook-off, Spam Jam lure bold foodies

To go with the Tailgater in today's post, if you are going to have a tailgate party you need to have something to eat, right? Well how about these tasty morsels from various food festivals as featured on CNN:

Thousands of people converge on the small town of Marlinton, West Virginia, each fall for a feast whose main ingredients were unlucky enough to crawl, slither or lurk too close to a speeding car.

It's RoadKill Cook-Off time, where past years' crowds have sampled dishes like Pothole Possum Stew, Fricasseed Wabbit Gumbo and Smeared Hog with Groundhog Gravy.

Welcome to the world of unusual -- dare we say weird? -- food festivals.

Sure, you can find plenty of culinary celebrations dedicated to everything from rhubarb to seafood, but there are also options to satisfy your cravings for rattlesnake, fried pig intestines or garlic ice cream.

The RoadKill Cook-Off is so popular that it fills all the motels and hotels in the county when it takes place on the last Saturday in September, said David Cain, who runs the event and samples all the dishes.

"There are some that are better than others, but I've never really had anything that I really didn't like," Cain said. "But there was one year they cooked a rattlesnake in some kind of stew, and ... there was no way I could taste that one."

The RoadKill Cook-Off began in 1991, when organizers thought it might boost attendance at the main event: the Pocahontas County Autumn Harvest Festival.
Did it ever.

About 10,000 people from all over the country came to last year's gathering, Cain said. All dishes featured in the festival must have animals commonly found dead on the side of the road -- such as deer, squirrels and snakes -- as their main ingredient. But the meat doesn't have to be actual roadkill.

"Judges will deduct points for every chipped tooth resulting from gravel not removed from the RoadKill," the official rules warn. "All judges have been tested for cast-iron stomachs and have sworn under oath to have no vegetarian tendencies."

All about Spam
Thousands of miles away, in Honolulu, Hawaii, aficionados of canned luncheon meat gather in April for the annual Waikiki Spam Jam, described by organizers as "a street festival that celebrates the people of Hawaii's love for Spam."

Some may call it mystery meat, but it's not advisable to do so in Hawaii, which has the highest per-capita consumption rate of Spam products in the United States. Almost 7 million cans worth of the pinkish product are eaten every year in the Aloha State, according to festival officials.

The crowds at this year's Spam Jam sampled dishes such as Spam Fried Rice, Spam Burgers and Guava Mango BBQ Spam Sliders.

"I think people are amused by the whole idea because it is pretty different. Like, why would you celebrate Spam?" said Barbara Campbell, one of the founders of the festival. "It's just about having fun, and they love the different Spam items."

A restaurant that offered Spam Chili Nachos at the festival was so amazed by their popularity that it's thinking of adding the dish to its permanent menu, Campbell added.

Fans who admire the yellow and blue design of Spam cans also have a chance to splurge on Spam-themed merchandise, including T-shirts, baby items and slippers.

Celebrating the 'stinking rose' Some unusual food festivals can tickle the nose as well as the palate. Vampires may hate garlic, but the pungent cloves draw huge crowds of hungry mortals each July to the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, "the garlic capital of the world."

If you're a fan, pack some breath mints and enjoy everything from traditional garlic-infused fare like scampi and stuffed mushrooms, to more exotic choices. Garlic ice cream, anyone?

Those who have tried the frozen dessert describe it as an "acquired taste."

"I would say when you first taste it, it's like regular vanilla ice cream, and then give it about 10 seconds, and you feel the kick of garlic," said Peter Ciccarelli, director of media relations for the festival. "It's not something that people would eat by a bowlful, nor would they put chocolate syrup on it."

Last year's festival drew more than 100,000 people who consumed more than 15,000 servings of garlic bread and 10,000 servings of garlic fries. Almost 3 tons of the "stinking rose," as garlic is sometimes fondly called, were used to flavor the dishes.

A meal with legs
The truly adventurous foodies may opt for BugFest and the leggy dishes served up by Café Insecta at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh each September.

Popular choices include the Ant-Chilada, a cheese enchilada in which toasted freeze-dried ants are used as both the filling and topping, and Hush-Grubbies, in which wax worm grubs are coated with hush-puppy batter and deep fried.

For dessert, visitors can try Chocolate-Chirp Cookies, which have crickets baked in.

"We basically use recipes that we would use for any other dish and substitute the protein," explained Matthew Busch, head chef at the museum's Acro Café, who creates the dishes at Café Insecta during BugFest. So, instead of doing a shrimp stir-fry, the museum might do a scorpion stir-fry.

Busch, who said he tries anything he cooks, recommended the Hush-Grubbies, calling the bugs inside "tasty" and "a little buttery." Stir-fried scorpions, on the other hand, can be a little bitter, he cautioned.

Watching the reactions of visitors who dig in to the bug-laden food is Busch's favorite part, and he described seeing an entire range of responses, from people who are gung-ho and want to try everything to those who are squeamish and have to be peer-pressured to take a bite.

Some people's strategy is just to eat around the bugs, Busch said.

The Anti-Swimmer Torpedo

Following our bellicose theme today: An unmanned undersea vehicle that targets combat divers:



Thinking of going for a swim? Keep an eye out for the Reusable Unambiguous Swimmer Warning Vehicle, a torpedo that can hunt down any swimmer who poses a threat to U.S. waters. It circles around its victim, relays the exact GPS coordinates of the prey, and sounds an alarm.

According to DefenseTech.org, the torpedo is an experimental device is five feet long, moves at a stealth-like 8 knots, and could be equipped with defensive -- or offensive -- weapons to stop a terrorist attack.

Once targeted, the torpedo descends into the water and then finds the swimmer, rising to the surface to set off the warning signals. The device uses an on-board digital compass to find its target underwater.

According to Jim Pollock, the project manager at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a research and development lab, the torpedo is just a proof of concept and there are no plans to use them for fighting terrorists.

The prototype UUV, which has an eel painted on its side, is on display at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space symposium in Maryland, in a large tank.

Jump into an actual fighter planes and participating in adrenaline-pumped dogfights a mile above the earth. The purveyor of these fantasies is Air Combat USA, a civilian dogfighting school based in Fullerton, Calif.

Since its founding in 1988, operating an aerial circus that travels to 30 mostly smaller and mid-sized airports. For $1,400, a customer receives training, one hour of flight time (including up to seven dogfights) and a post-flight performance review, all with an instructor from Air Combat's staff--who are retired military pilots with Vietnam or Desert Storm experience. No pilot's license is needed. Participants sign a waiver similar to one for bungee-jumping. According to the company, its only incident in 21 years of operation was a short landing in San Diego in 1993 in which both pilots walked away unscathed.

Embrio One-Wheel Concept

This is a somewhat old concept, and it is totally vaporware, but it is the first time I came across it. Realistically, with the Segway's technology I don't see why this couldn't be doable now rather than in 2023 which is what the design brief called for. This hydrogen fuel cell powered, gyroscopically balanced, one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle provides an extraordinary vision of the kind of personal transport we
could be using 20 years from now.

The design brief for Bombadier EMBRIO Concept was to "create highly innovative, functional and exciting products to exceed people's recreational needs" and find the "next thing" in recreational vehicles. The result is a futuristic and minimalistic one-wheeler that is as about far away as you can get from the conventional image of a uni-cycle - a mode of transport normally associated with circuses and street parades.

Balancing Act

The riding position will be similar to a motorcycle with a complex series of sensors and gyroscopes balancing passengers on the single wheel. The rider activates a trigger on the left handlebar to accelerate and turns are made by shifting body-weight rather than actually steering.

When the EMBRIO concept is at rest in "stand-by configuration", the front wheels deploy to the ground like landing gear on a plane to increase longitudinal stability. The landing
gear retracts when the vehicle speed reaches 20 km/h but even without the landing gear, the EMBRIO would be stable when motionless because of the gyroscope.

The EMBRIO concept's main power source is a hydrogen fuel cell and additional advanced technologies including a high-performance braking system, active suspension, night vision, a digitally encoded key and robotic assistance would be incorporated into the design.

The Concept is constructed from lightweight materials including Polypropylene, Santoprene, nylon (injection moulding), aluminum (stamping, die casting and robotic assembly),
magnesium (casting) and the use of fuel cell technology and recycling of aluminum and polyethylene is designed to make the Bombardier EMBRIO an eco-friendly design throughout its life cycle.

The Bombardier EMBRIO concept is one of several concepts proposed by Canadian based Bombardier Recreational Products and it received the Gold Award at the 2003 Annual Design Awards (Industrial Design Society of America & Business Week Magazine).

Glow in the dark Musrooms

term, emerge during the rainy season in Japanese and Brazilian forests,
scattering the floor with glowing spores.

fungi is due to bioluminescence, one of the weird but wonderful
reactions that happen naturally in many plants and animals.

Bioluminescence occurs when the natural chemical energy produced within
an organism is converted to light energy. The result is an amazing
display of natural fluorescent light, or ‘cold light’ (as
opposed to red hot light). The color of bioluminescence is normally at
the blue/green end of the visible light spectrum.

This organic light display can be seen in the late summer months, and
although there are nightly visits to the forests in Japan, these rare
shrooms only thrive where they are because they’ve been
relatively undisturbed by humans. So, for now it’s probably best
to enjoy them from the comfort of your own home, that way they’ll
be around for a while longer.

Ten Chinese Inventions

10. Gunpowder

We'll begin with arguably the most famous ancient Chinese invention. Legend has it that gunpowder was accidentally discovered by alchemists looking for a concoction that would create immortality in humans. Ironically, what these ancient chemists stumbled upon was an invention that could easily take human life.

Early gunpowder was made of a mixture of potassium nitrate (saltpeter), charcoal and sulfur, and it was first described in 1044 in the Collection of the Most Important Military Techniques, compiled by Zeng Goliang [source: Chinese Embassy in South Africa]. It's assumed the discovery of gunpowder occurred sometime earlier, since Zeng describes three different gunpowder mixtures and the Chinese used it for signal flares and fireworks before appropriating it for military use in rudimentary grenades.

Over time, we realized that metals added to the mixture created brilliant colors in gunpowder explosions and -- kaboom! -- modern fireworks displays were born. It also makes a handy explosive for projectiles like bullets.


9. The Compass

Where would we be without the compass? We'd be lost, that's where. Those of us who hike in the woods or fly various aircraft have the Chinese to thank for guiding us home safely.

Originally, the Chinese created their compasses to point to true south. This was because they considered south, not north, their cardinal direction [source: Wright]. The earliest compasses were created in the fourth century B.C. and were made of lodestone.

The mere existence of lodestone is the result of a bit of luck. Lodestone is a type of magnetite (a magnetic iron ore) that becomes highly magnetized when struck by lightning [source: Wasilewski]. The result is a mineral that's magnetized toward both the north and south poles. We're not certain precisely who came up with the clever idea of discerning direction using lodestone, but archaeological evidence shows the Chinese fashioned ladles that balanced on a divining board; the ladles would point the direction to inner harmony for ancient Chinese soothsayers.


8. Paper

It's not entirely clear who first came up with the notion to convert thoughts into a written language. There was a horserace between the Sumerians in Mesopotamia, the Harappa in present day Afghanistan and the Kemites in Egypt to be the first to formulate a written language. We do know that the first languages appear to have emerged around 5,000 years ago. One can even make the case that it dates back earlier -- that is, if one included artistic expressions like cave paintings as a form of written language. Once language began to develop, though, humans wrote on anything that would lay still long enough. Clay tablets, bamboo, papyrus and stone were only a few of the earliest writing surfaces.

Things changed once the Chinese -- specifically, a man named Cai Lun -- invented the prototype for modern paper. Before Cai's breakthrough, the Chinese wrote on thin strips of bamboo and lengths of silk, but in A.D.105, he created a mixture of wood fibers and water and pressed it onto a woven cloth. The weave in the cloth allowed the moisture in the pulpy mixture to seep out, resulting in a rough paper [source: Wisconsin Paper Council]. Exactly what Cai wrote on his first piece of paper is unknown.


7. Pasta?

Anybody who loves a good bowl of pasta e fagioli or linguine and clams may want to tip his hat to the ancient Chinese for coming up with pasta -- not the Italians, as you may have suspected.

The jury is still out on this one, but it looks like the Chinese beat either the Italians or the Arabs (it's unclear which) by around 2,000 years. In 2006, archaeologists excavating a 4,000 year-old settlement at Lajia in the Qinghai Province near the Tibetian border uncovered an overturned bowl of stringy noodles buried beneath ten feet of earth [source: Roach].

The newly discovered pasta may be the world's oldest. It's made from two types of millet grain, both of which have been cultivated in China for about 7,000 years. What's more, the Chinese still use these grains to make pasta to this day.


6. Wheelbarrow

The Chinese are also responsible for easing the burden of humans around the world and across time with the wheelbarrow. A general named Jugo Liang, who lived during the Han Dynasty, is widely credited with coming up with the concept of a one-wheeled cart used to carry heavy objects in the second century [source: Krebs and Krebs]. Jugo's conception missed the mark just a bit; he didn't add the barrow (handles) that came later as his invention was refined. Still, Jugo beat the Europeans by about 1,000 years with his wheelbarrow.

Originally, the vehicle was intended for military purposes. Recognizing the physical advantages the wheelbarrow gave its armies over any enemies -- they were used as mobile barricades as well as for transportation -- the Chinese kept their invention secret for centuries.

An old folktale also gives the credit for inventing the wheelbarrow to a farmer from the first century B.C. named Ko Yu [source: Leinhard]. Although his existence is questionable, there is a common thread between Jugo and Ko: Like the general, the farmer is said to have kept the wheelbarrow secret by describing it in code.


5. Seismograph

Although the Chinese couldn't tell anyone exactly what an earthquake measured on the Richter scale (since the Richter scale wasn't created until 1935), they did manage to invent the world's first earthquake detector -- a seismograph. Not only did imperial astronomer Chang Heng create a seismograph during the Han Dynasty in the early second century, he created a magnificently beautiful one.

Heng's creation was a heavy bronze vessel with nine dragons facing downward embedded into its outside. The dragons were spaced equidistant from one another on the vessel, and below each dragon, a detached frog looked upward as each frog held its mouth open.

Inside the vessel, a pendulum hung motionless until a tremor moved it. At this point, the pendulum's swing set the seismograph's internal levers in motion. This would trigger the release of a ball held in the mouth of the dragon facing the direction of the earthquake's epicenter. The ball would then fall into the mouth of the frog directly below it [source: Xinhua News Agency]. This first seismograph seems a bit basic, but it would be another 1,500 years before Western nations developed their own versions [source: Asia Central].


4. Alcohol

You c­an thank the Chinese for ethanol and isopropyl alcohol -- not to mention beer, wine and liquor. When you think of it, few of man's ingenuities have delivered as much joy and sorrow as alcohol.

For many years, it was assumed that alcohol fermentation grew out of other, similar processes. By the early third century B.C., the Chinese had figured out how to refine food products like vinegar and soy sauce using the techniques of fermentation and distillation [source: Huang]. Alcoholic spirits would soon follow.

Recent archaeological discoveries have pushed the date for Chinese fermentation and the creation of alcohol much further back. Nine-thousand-year-old pottery shards uncovered in Henan province show traces of alcohol. This discovery proves that the Chinese were the first to make alcohol, since the previous title holders, the ancient Arabs, didn't come up with alcoholic drinks until 1,000 years later [source: Walter].


3. Kites

Two ­ancient Chinese men share the credit for coming up with one of China's biggest claims to fame. During the fourth century B.C., Gongshu Ban and Mo Di, a patron of the arts and a philosopher, respectively, constructed bird-shaped kites that dipped and dove in the wind. The pair's novelty caught on quickly.

Over time, the Chinese adapted and added to the initial kite's design and found new uses for it beyond amusement. Kites became an easy way to fish without a boat, simply by using a line and hook draped from the kite and dangling it into an inaccessible body of water. Kites also became instrumental in military applications, serving as unmanned drones that delivered payloads of gunpowder to enemy fortifications. In 1232, the Chinese employed kites to drop propaganda leaflets over a Mongol prisoner-of-war encampment, urging the captured Chinese there to rebel and eventually overtake their captors [source: Pleskacheuskaya].

Soon, the urge to fly would be married with the technology of the kite to produce another Chinese invention, the hang glider.


2. Hang Gliders

As we discussed earlier, kites were invented by the fourth century B.C. By the end of the sixth century A.D., the Chinese had managed to build kites large and aerodynamic enough to sustain the weight of an average-sized man. It was only a matter of time before someone decided to simply remove the kite strings and see what happened.

The Chinese were using untethered kites that we know today as hang gliders. However, these "kites" weren't used for thrill rides: Emperors found joy in forcing convicted criminals and captured enemies to jump off cliffs while strapped into the gliders. One poor man flew two miles before he landed safely [source: Wright]. With these early flights, the Chinese had beaten European ingenuity by 1335 years [source: Pleskacheuskaya].


1. Silk

The Mongols, the Byzantines, the Greeks and Romans all found themselves unhappily facing Chinese military innovations like gunpowder. It was silk, however, that helped broker peace between ancient China and other cultures. The demand for silk was so high that the fine fabric helped link China to the outside world through trade [source: Columbia University]. The fabric gave rise to the fabled Silk Road trade routes that eventually stretched from China to the Mediterranean, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

The method for manipulating this silkworm-produced material existed 4,700 years ago. A scroll containing an article on silk production was found in the tomb of created during the Liangzhu period, which lasted from 3330 to 2200 B.C. [source: ChinaCulture.org]. The Chinese closely guarded the origin of silk; they only lost control of their secret when monks from Europe got their hands on silkworm eggs and took them back West [source: Columbia University].

How Do Ants Survive Being In A Microwave?

To understand the reason why an ant survives in a microwave oven is to understand the way a microwave oven works. A microwave oven emits a form of energy called ‘standing waves”. That is to say that evenly spaced, stationary waves of energy bombard the turntable (or plate) in a vertical fashion so that only specific areas of the turntable are struck by the waves. Everything inside the microwave is not necessarily exposed to the waves, especially when the turntable is motionless. This is why you notice that certain portions of your food are well heated while others remain cold whenever the turntable is not moving. The sole purpose of the moving turntable is to ensure that all areas of the food pass through the stationary ‘standing waves”. Increasing the intensity of the microwave oven doesn’t turn up the heat, it activates more ‘standing waves” in a given area of space.

The physical size of an object has little to do with its susceptibility to microwave generated heat. In fact, chemists use microwave technology to heat sub-micron particles. The ant’s size only comes into play because he is able to navigate between the ‘standing waves’ by sensing the areas where there is high volume heat and low volume heat. You can visualize the patterns of low heat v. high heat by filling a paper plate with marshmallows and putting them in the oven with the turntable turned off. After a few seconds you will see a pattern of melt or blistering on the marshmallows that are exposed while the others seem unaffected. Additionally, the intensity of the waves is greater in some areas than in others. You can see this by putting a pat of butter on the surface of the turntable and another on the bottom of an overturned paper cup. The one on the cup will melt long before the one on the turntable, because the wave intensity is lower near the bottom and sides of the oven than it is at various points elevated just above the turntable (where food heaped on a is plate usually located).

A single ant, or even a few ants, can simply walk around between the waves of energy, making their way from one safe area to the next, and avoid getting nuked. If, on the other hand, you put a thousand ants in your microwave and agitate them so that they are running around in a panic, you will, without a doubt, see many of them turned to toast.

What I’ve remembered most was what we called ‘Mongolian Calendar’. Every morning a selected group of soldiers were sent to nearby hill to realign the stack of planks laying on the ground and painted in white so that they show the current date. The size of this was big enough so that people from the town could see it on the hill”.

What is Google's satellite maps are the remains of this, and it seems the tradition was live until 1997.

Thirty years ago, Derek Paravicini, Camilla Parker Bowles’s nephew, was born in the Royal Berkshire Hospital 14 weeks prematurely. Because he was born so early, Derek is blind. Derek’s verbal skills and emotional capacity is limited. His English is well-spoken, clear and loud, but his capacity for thought does not stretch far. He is an echolaliac, meaning that he echoes what you say to him, turning your question into a statement.

And yet, Derek has absolute pitch — a rare gift, meaning that, when he hears a chord with ten notes in it, he can identify every one. Most professional musicians can get about five. He can master any melody on earth, has a databank of thousands of songs in his head and can play any one of them at will, improvising as he goes. Ask him to play Ain’t No Sunshine, in B major (a key in which it was not composed) and in ragtime -- his fingers flutter across the keyboard in a hummingbird blur of staggering virtuosity.

Derek is also interesting in scientific terms too. Research has revealed that only one in 10,000 babies who are born at term have absolute pitch, but 40 per cent born prematurely have it, and it seems the brain capacity that would have gone elsewhere, into verbal reasoning or social skills, is transferred to music. Derek has appeared in two documentaries about genius savants, and has appeared on 60 Minutes. Now he is embarking on his first tour with a 20-piece orchestra.

Curves of constant width

From Wikipedia, a curve of constant width is a convex planar shape whose width, measured by the distance between two opposite parallel lines touching its boundary, is the same regardless of the direction of those two parallel lines. The shape we most associate with this is a circle, but there are other shapes that meet this criteria, such as the Reuleaux Triangle which is at the heart of Mazda's Wankel Engine, and some British coinage, where the constant shape allows machines to determine if the coinage is the proper denomination.

However, another interesting application is this bicycle, which, because of the constant geometric shape, rides as smoothly as a regular bicycle, although more effort is required:





As the Times from the UK describes, Chinese inventor Guan Baihua intend the bike for people who wish more of a work out on their bikes. The Times notes that the bicycle isn’t the first to exploit these shapes — they have been used as manholes since (unlike square covers) the constant size prevents covers from falling down the holes.
